Pep Guardiola 'very happy' 10-man Bayern could salvage draw

Pep Guardiola said he was ecstatic that Bayern Munich were able to battle for a point against Schalke on Tuesday despite going down to 10 men early in the match.

Jerome Boateng was sent off for fouling Schalke's Sidney Sam on the edge of the area, earning a red card as well as giving away a penalty.

Manuel Neuer dived the right way, though, and Bayern were actually able to take the lead through Arjen Robben, before Benedikt Howedes levelled matters for the visitors.

Bayern dropped points for the second straight game after last Friday's defeat to Wolfsburg, but Guardiola said he was more than pleased with the result.

"I'm not happy, I'm very, very, very happy," the manager said. "Obviously we wanted all three points, but 70 minutes with a man less against Schalke isn't easy.

"We controlled the game very well and we had enough chances. It was a much better performance than against Wolfsburg.

"Everything's OK -- there's no debate about the red card! We were lucky they missed the penalty."

Bastian Schweinsteiger also said he thought Bayern had improved since last week's defeat to second-place Wolfsburg, but he thought the German champions still should have earned three points.

"We were better than in the game against Wolfsburg, we had more control and we never let them get at us on the break. But we're not happy with a 1-1 draw," Schweinsteiger said.

"We were down to 10 men but we still had chances to win it. We'll go to Stuttgart now looking for a victory."

Robben caleld the result "frustrating" after Bayern let their lead slip.

"Obviously we were down to 10 men, but we've gone 1-0 up and then we let Howedes make it 1-1. That can't be happening. If you concede a goal like that in the Champions League it can be fatal."

Schalke's Klaas-Jan Huntelaar served the first of his six-match suspension, and coach Roberto di Matteo missed his striker after Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting saw his penalty saved.

"We've taken a point away from home," Di Matteo said. "Our tactics worked out well, but we're still a bit disappointed because we've missed a penalty. The draw is probably more or less the right result."
