Manchester United target Kevin Strootman out for the season

Manchester United's rumoured target Kevin Strootman will be out for the rest of the season following a relapse of his knee injury while AS Roma boss Rudi Garcia described it as "a catastrophe" for the Serie A giants.

The Duch international has been out of action since last March when he first picked up the injury which caused him to sit out Netherland's 2014 World Cup campaign.

Having returned to full training back in November, the midfielder started for the Giallorossi during their 3-0 win over Torino on Nov. 9, but was substituted after 34 minutes in the 1-1 draw with Fiorentina on Jan. 25 when he got a knock on the same knee that was operated on last year.

Roma have confirmed on Friday that the 24-year-old will be going for another surgery as Garcia made it known that his star midfielder will be out for the rest of the season.

"Losing him, especially after a long injury, is a catastrophe for us," Garcia said after Sunday's 1-1 draw as reported by The Mirror. "The season is over for Strootman."

United boss Louis van Gaal is known to be an admirer of the midfielder and there was even talk of the Red Devils making a bid for him in the January transfer window.

Van Gaal is still keen to take his compatriot to Old Trafford in the summer but with Strootman's latest injury setback, it is unclear when he can regain full fitness and return to the pitch again.
