Louis van Gaal has ruled out any further signings for Manchester United in the January transfer window while Darren Fletcher looks set to exit the club.

The Red Devils have made one addition to their squad by bringing in goalkeeper Victor Valdes after a successful spell training with the club.

But while sources have told ESPN FC that United are interested in Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels and Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte, Van Gaal insisted the only transfer business at Old Trafford will be outgoings despite a muscle rupture ruling Michael Carrick out for up to four weeks.

The Dutch coach confirmed that Fletcher's long United career is coming to an end, with the midfielder set to finalise a move to West Ham.

Van Gaal told Friday's news conference that he does not like the winter window, saying: "I don't think it's favourable for the league because it's a little bit unfair. You start a league and then you change your team -- the richer clubs can do that and it's not fair for others.

"But that's the rule and you can take benefit of it. I read every day that I or United are interested in other players. We only have under contract now Victor Valdes. We gave him a chance. We are only selling players, not buying them."

Fletcher has made 342 appearances for United and was appointed vice-captain by Van Gaal last summer but has been allowed to leave on a free transfer.

The United boss added: "He is at West Ham now I believe, so we will have to wait and see. He is my third captain so he is an important guy in the dressing room.

"I like him as a person so we shall miss him. But he hasn't played so many times and that is always the main goal of a player. We have talked about that and he prefers to play."

United have also loaned fourth-choice goalkeeper Ben Amos to Championship club Bolton for a month.
