Asamoah Gyan boosts Ghana past Algeria; Senegal go top in Group C

Asamoah Gyan returned from a bout of malaria to score a stoppage-time winner and keep Ghana's African Nations Cup hopes alive with a 1-0 win over tournament favourites Algeria on Friday.

Desperately needing a win to revive their campaign, Ghana looked to be on the brink of elimination before Gyan ran onto a desperate long ball right at the end and scored past Rais Mbolhi in the Algerian goal.

Four-time champions Ghana had struggled to get going in Equatorial Guinea under new coach Avram Grant. Gyan also was forced to miss the first game because of a mild case of malaria, but he returned to revive their campaign with the last-gasp match-winner.

Substitute Wakaso Mubarak hit a long pass downfield right at the end and Gyan muscled past his defender, and then finished low and past Mbolhi for Ghana's crucial victory.

Algeria, Africa's top-ranked team, had appeared happy to play for a draw after beating South Africa in their opener.

In the second game, Senegal rallied for a 1-1 draw with South Africa to move top of Group C.

Defender Serigne Mbodji equalised with a thumping header in the 61st minute after Senegal had fallen behind to Oupa Manyisa's goal early in the second half.

The Senegalese also had a goal disallowed three minutes before Mbodji's header, when Sadio Mane's strike was ruled out for offside on a tight call.

Senegal fought back for the second time in the tournament after a last-minute 2-1 win over Ghana in their opener.

Group C is wide open, with Algeria and Ghana a point behind on three points. South Africa are bottom and have the toughest task to make the quarterfinals.
