Valencia track Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher

Valencia have made a move to sign Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher during the winter transfer window, according to reports in Spain.

Scotland international Fletcher has started just four games for United this season, with coach Louis Van Gaal preferring other options including Michael Carrick, Daley Blind, Marouane Fellaini, Ander Herrera and even Wayne Rooney in midfield roles.

The 30-year-old Scotland international has just six months left on his current contract, and could therefore be allowed to leave Old Trafford on a free transfer, or for a nominal fee.

He spent the best part of two years out the game after suffering from ulcerative colitis but has now been fully fit for over a year.

Currently fifth in La Liga, Valencia are looking to strengthen as they bid to return to the Champions League, and AS reports that Fletcher is currently studying an offer made by the Mestalla side.

Los Che, now backed by billionaire owner Peter Lim, have already spent 30 million euros during the current window by bringing in Argentina international midfielder Enzo Perez from Benfica.

Even with Lim's backing, Valencia are still reportedly running close to the budgetary and salaries limit set by La Liga's authorities, even after selling youngster Carles Gil to Aston Villa for around four million euros last week.

Marca reports that, should Fletcher join Valencia, current holding midfielder Javi Fuego could move to Premier League high-flyers West Ham in a bid to keep the books balanced.

Fletcher has also been linked with a move to West Bromwich Albion and West Ham United in the British press.
