Equatorial Guinea held by Congo, Gabon win in African Nations Cup

Congo netted an 87th-minute equaliser to deny host nation Equatorial Guinea victory as the teams drew 1-1 in the opening match of the 2015 African Nations Cup in Bata.

Middlesbrough forward Emilio Nsue got the benefit of what looked a debatable offside decision to open the scoring in the 16th minute and Equatorial Guinea, by far the lowest-ranked team in the tournament, had chances to increase their lead in the second half.

However, they could not make them count and Congo deservedly drew level during a late onslaught when Thievy Bifouma slotted home an almost identical goal to Nsue -- although without any question of its legality -- as the match finished 1-1.

In the second match, Gabon defeated Burkina Faso 2-0 with captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scoring one and setting up the second against the 2013 finalists.

Aubameyang kept his composure to sweep a shot into the roof of the net in the 19th minute after his initial effort was blocked.

He crossed for Malick Evouna to head in the second in the 72nd minute, sealing victory and delighting the drum-banging fans who made the trip across the border from neighbouring Gabon.

Gabon's rapid start saw them go top of Group A after the first day of matches, and sent Burkina Faso to the bottom.
