Fernando Morientes to make return with amateur football club Santa Ana

Former Real Madrid and Liverpool striker Fernando Morientes is coming out of retirement after agreeing to sign for Madrid-based amateur side Deportivo Santa Ana.

Morientes, 38, has decided to make his comeback after five years of retirement where he had been dividing his time between football commentary and analysis for Spanish TV station Cuatro and helping to coach the Real Madrid junior teams.

After leaving Real Madrid's backroom staff last summer, Morientes began training with Santa Ana -- who play in the Primera Division Regional (the fifth tier of the Spanish football pyramid system) -- and he has now been offered a contract.

The club also have another Morientes, Fernando Junior, in their youth ranks and president Rafael Gonzalez said in quotes reported by Marca: "He [Morientes] said he would help out if he felt good. He promised to give us an answer in January and said yes. We want him to play in all of the home games, where he feels more comfortable. He is in good physical condition and he hasn't forgotten how to score goals."

Before retiring in 2010, Morientes' career spanned 15 seasons, the best of which were in a Real Madrid shirt that included winning two La Liga titles, three UEFA Champions League titles, and two Intercontinental Cups.

Morientes is set to make his debut for his new club on Sunday, Jan. 25 against CD Recuerdo once the signing is completed.
