Jurgen Klinsmann supportive of Altidore's, Diskerud's moves to MLS

U.S. manager Jurgen Klinsmann said that he was supportive of Jozy Altidore's reported move to Toronto FC during an exclusive interview with ESPN FC on Wednesday.

"The biggest advice is 'You gotta play,'" Klinsmann said. "You can't sit on the bench there and not be in match fitness, so find a team that gives you a chance to play.

"The most important thing is that he catches up with the rest of the group and plays again and scores goals on a regular basis."

Klinsmann was also positive regarding Mix Diskerud's transfer to New York City FC, but lamented the limited opportunities Diskerud, Altidore and other U.S. players have faced in Europe.

"In [Diskerud's] case, there's no Champions League team in Europe on a higher level that asked him to join them, so the options he had were probably not as attractive to him as the option he chose.

"Do I, as the national team coach, want to see all of our players playing in the European Champions League? Yeah, absolutely. But that's not reality; it's not happening. And therefore whatever they decide, we'll support the best way we can."

Klinsmann went on to reveal that Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber had apologized to Klinsmann for criticizing the U.S. national team boss' remarks regarding the league in October. Klinsmann had been critical of Michael Bradley's and Clint Dempsey's returns to MLS from Roma and Tottenham, respectively.

But Klinsmann was quick to differentiate these latest transfers to the U.S. league from those of previous American stars, and reiterated his support for MLS.

"You can't compare Jozy with Mix Diskerud or Mix Diskerud with Michael Bradley," Klinsmann said. "You know, they're all in a different situation and a different moment in their career.

"I chose 12 players from MLS to go to Brazil and they've all done very well. I'm a big supporter of MLS. But I'm also just taking every player as an individual and seeing where his development could go."
