Thierry Henry believes Steven Gerrard was on par with Paul Scholes as one of the Premier League's "unstoppable" midfielders but feels it is the right time for him to move to Major League Soccer.
Gerrard, 34, is to leave Liverpool to join LA Galaxy on July 1 and Arsenal legend Henry, who ended his career in December after a spell with New York Red Bulls, said the Reds captain is making the right call.
"I don't think he's leaving the Premier League too soon," he told several British newspapers. "He is going at the right time.
"Listen, you will never replace Steven Gerrard. Someone else will come in and do something different but you cannot replace Gerrard. I am not saying nobody will come to them but you just can't replace what he does.
"He is clever enough to adapt over there. Saying that, he will arrive in a team that is already on tune. Trust me, they [LA Galaxy] have either been winning or losing in the final every single year. They are a very good organisation."
Gerrard has faced criticism for his form this season, but Henry added: "Stevie G is Stevie G. It makes me laugh when I see people talking about him the way that they have been recently."
He said the former England international ranked alongside ex-Manchester United star Scholes as one of the finest players he faced.
"As a midfielder, he was for me unstoppable, along with Paul Scholes," Henry said. "We had so many battles and I always used to say to him: 'It would have been an honour to play with you.'
"He is the dream for any striker. Ask Fernando Torres. Ask Luis Suarez. Ask any striker who has played with him. He still does it. That through-ball along the ground or in the air is a dream for any striker."
