Timo Hildebrand leaves Eintracht Frankfurt, could move to MLS

Eintracht Frankfurt have terminated Timo Hildebrand's contract, potentially paving the way for the goalkeeper to sign for an MLS club.

Hildebrand, having maintained his fitness at Seattle Sounders, joined Die Adler as a free agent in late September following an injury that ended Frankfurt keeper Kevin Trapp's 2014.

When Trapp's backup Felix Wiedwald was also sidelined with an illness towards the end of the year, former Germany shot-stopper Hildebrand was selected for three of Frankfurt's games, taking his Bundesliga total to 301 league appearances.

Ahead of Frankfurt's winter training camp in the UAE both Trapp and Wiedwald have returned to full fitness, with Frankfurt denying the latter a return to his former club Werder Bremen.

Hildebrand has subsequently asked the club to terminate his contract, and Eintracht have granted him that wish.

"Timo would have only been keeper No. 3 in the second half of the season. That would have made no sense from a sporting perspective. That's why he has asked us to terminate his contract," Frankfurt sporting director Bruno Hubner told kicker.

Hildebrand said on Facebook: "My mission [at Frankfurt] is accomplished. I will take care of my future now."

Last week, Hildebrand's agent Jorg Neblung told ESPN FC: "It remains Timo's wish to work in the United States before his son's first day at school."

Hildebrand won seven caps for Germany between 2004 and 2007 and was part of Jurgen Klinsmann's Germany squad at the 2006 World Cup.

He has made 301 Bundesliga appearances for Stuttgart, Hoffenheim, Schalke and Frankfurt, and has also featured for Valencia in La Liga.
