Lazio president Claudio Lotito criticises Francesco Totti celebration

Lazio president Claudio Lotito criticised Roma forward Francesco Totti's celebration in the Rome derby, telling Rai TV: "That selfie didn't have anything to do with football."

Totti took a picture of himself after scoring as Roma battled back to a 2-2 draw on Sunday thanks to the 38-year-old's brace.

However, Lotito said in a phone interview with Rai's "Un Giorno Da Pecora" programme: "Maybe at the end of the match it could have made sense, but during the match definitely not."

There were minor clashes following the game and Lotito added: "You've seen what happened after the match. Any action can become a provocation and, although Totti's gesture was innocuous in itself, it could have exacerbated an already tense atmosphere.

"I am not saying that it was a provocation, but simply that it was inappropriate -- in that context, in that moment, in my opinion, it was out of place. My captain would never have done that."

Roma president James Pallotta said on the club's official Twitter feed that he considered it a "shame" that Lotito made the comments and said Totti provided a "great moment."

He added: "I would've almost preferred if he took a selfie of his own face after the goal."

Meanwhile, Roma coach Rudi Garcia expressed his disappointment that Totti never won the Ballon d'Or during his prime.

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo was named the finest player of 2014 on Monday, while Germany's Joachim Low was named best coach.

Garcia, who attended the ceremony, repeated his belief that Totti is a "genius" and told the media: "It is not normal that he's never won it, but the history of the Ballon d'Or is like that. Totti could have hoped to win it when he won the [2006] World Cup, but what matters is his joy on the pitch."

Garcia also backed the winners of the two biggest awards on Monday, saying: "The World Cup-winning coach and the best player have won -- I think that's fair. I was thinking about [Manuel] Neuer, a fantastic goalkeeper, but this year the best player was indeed Cristiano Ronaldo."
