Juventus keen on Henrikh Mkhitaryan after Wesley Sneijder deal issues

Juventus general director Beppe Marotta has suggested the club could consider a move for Borussia Dortmund's Henrikh Mkhitaryan after admitting a move for Wesley Sneijder no longer appears viable.

Juve were reported to be close to tying up a deal for Galatasaray midfielder Sneijder, but the negotiations now seem to have reached a stalemate.

"The January transfer window is dubbed the 'repair transfer market' and we do not need to repair anything, so we will only use this window to take advantage of any potential opportunity," Marotta told Sky Sport Italia just before his side's 3-1 win at Napoli.

"We had really hoped [to sign] Sneijder, but we feel we don't want to complete any deal which is so financially significant."

If Galatasaray do not lower their demands for Sneijder, Mkhitaryan could be an alternative target, with the Armenia international having endured a difficult campaign so far with Dortmund in which he has failed to register a goal or assist.

"Mkhitaryan, like [Porto's] Rolando, is a player who would work well within our project," he said. "Yes, he is on our list, but at the moment he is just a hypothesis."

However, Marotta said Fiorentina goalkeeper Norberto Neto, who has been strongly linked with Juventus and Liverpool, was not a target.

"We are not in talks with Neto, so I will deny our interest there," he said.

It also appears the Italian champions will not make a move for Napoli's Gonzalo Higuain.

Asked whether Juve need a great striker, he added: "We've always achieved fantastic results in Italy with [the strikers already at Juve] -- of course, there is always room for improvement, but we always bear in mind our budget needs.

"It goes without saying that any club would want Higuain in their squad, but at the moment our only real concern is in defence, and that's purely because of the many injuries. However, [Andrea] Barzagli is getting better and [Martin] Caceres will play [against Napoli], so we'll see."
