AFF finalists Thailand and Malaysia set for rematch in King's Cup

An epic rematch between 2014 AFF Suzuki Cup finalists Thailand and Malaysia could take place next month with Dollah Salleh's side set to replace Croatia in the King's Cup.

The Croatian Football Federation has withdrawn from the tournament from Feb. 1 to 7 in the Nakhon Ratchasima province in Thailand.

That leaves South Korea and North Korea as the only confirmed teams, in addition to the host nation.

The Football Association of Thailand (FAT) are in talks with three nations about taking Croatia's place at the tournament, which celebrates the birthday of Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

As reported by Bangkok Post, FAT president Worawi Makudi said: "We have contacted Malaysia, South Africa and Uzbekistan.

"It is likely to be Malaysia who may use the team which finished second in the AFF Suzuki Cup."

After the two-legged final that saw Thailand claim their fourth ASEAN crown with a 4-3 aggregate victory, coach Dollah will be eager to erase the memories of their late collapse in the second leg at the National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur.

After holding a 3-0 lead on the night, they conceded late goals from Charyl Chappuis and Chanathip Songkrasin to let the trophy slip from their grasp.

Thailand head coach Kiatisuk Senamuang says that while he would be pleased if Malaysia took part, he would prefer to face a West Asian team in preparation for the Asian zone qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup later this year.
