Lionel Messi to Premier League would be 'fantastic' says Swansea's Monk

Swansea manager Garry Monk wants to see Lionel Messi playing in the Barclays Premier League and has no doubt that the Argentina captain would adapt to the rigours of English football.

Messi has spent his entire senior career at Barcelona -- becoming the Primera Division's all-time leading goalscorer in November -- but the Spanish press have reported that his relationship with head coach Luis Enrique has broken down.

According to Marca, Barca captains Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta had to intervene to stop Enrique from reprimanding Messi after the South American failed to report to training on Monday, although Enrique later reiterated that the player's absence was due to illness.

The speculation intensified on Wednesday when Enrique refused to deny suggestions that all was not well between him and his star striker. And subsequent reports that Messi wants out of the Nou Camp has prompted talk that the 27-year-old forward could move to the Premier League.

Jose Mourinho's Chelsea have been mooted as a potential destination, and Monk is keen to see Messi ply his trade on British shores.

"It would be great to see him [in the Premier League]," the Swans boss said.

"Whether he ever leaves Barcelona I'm not so sure. I know there's lots of stuff going on there at the moment.

"It would be fantastic to see him in the Premier League."

Monk is adamant that Messi could forge a strong working relationship with Mourinho, who managed Barcelona's fierce rivals Real Madrid before returning to Stamford Bridge in 2013, and a trophy-laden era could ensue for the Blues should the pair join forces.

"To score that amount of goals and the player he is, how could he not [adapt to English football]?" Monk added.

"Basically you are buying a guarantee and any club that gets him know they are getting a guarantee barring any injuries and someone that can win you titles and leagues.

"Mourinho's the top coach in the world. All the sounds that come out is that the players love him. If it is Chelsea, I'm sure he would be 100 percent fine."

When asked about reported friction with Messi at a press conference on Wednesday, Enrique said: "I neither confirm nor deny those reports. The things that are part of the team always remain in the changing room.

"Messi is the best player in the world and I have said this many times. I have the same relationship with all my players that I had at the start of the season. That has not changed."
