Fernando Torres happy with derby win in first game back with Atletico Madrid

Returning Atletico Madrid hero Fernando Torres said it felt good after his second debut for the club finally brought him a derby win in Wednesday's Copa del Rey last 16 first leg at the Estadio Vicente Calderon.

Torres returned to Atletico on loan from AC Milan, and was thrown straight in to start the high-profile game, in his first appearance in more than seven years for his boyhood club.

The 30-year-old did not have an impressive match, managing more offsides than efforts on goal in just under an hour on the pitch, but he did play his part in what was his first ever victory over the city rivals in ten attempts.

After the game, the former Chelsea and Liverpool player told Canal Plus that he was delighted with the result, although the tie was not yet over.

"I am happy, happy for many things," said Torres. "For the result of the team, the atmosphere we are experiencing, the fans. For everything. It feels good to beat Madrid, as it always does when you beat one of the best teams in the world."

Torres said that Atletico's ability to soak up long spells of Madrid possession and then do damage on the counterattack and through set-pieces was all part of the plan.

"There was great work put in," he said. "We controlled the game in nearly all parts of the play. You must set out for 90 very long minutes, and anything can happen. We knew they would have possession in the game. We wanted to be very close together, and not let them counterattack. We knew how to take advantage of our moment, and we were more comfortable."

The tie was however not yet over ahead of Thursday's return game at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, warned Torres.

"This gives us a big chance to progress, but a 2-0 at the Bernabeu is not definitive," he said. "90 minutes there can be long."
