French leagues to hold minute's silence for Paris attack victims

The French league (LFP) says its clubs will hold a minute's silence before their games as a mark of respect for the victims of a terror attack against a satirical newspaper in Paris.

Masked gunmen shouting "Allahu akbar!" stormed the Paris offices of Charlie Hebdo newspaper on Wednesday, killing at least 12 people, including the paper's editor, before escaping in a getaway car.

"A minute's silence will precede the weekend meetings of the 20th day of Ligue 1 and the 19th day of Ligue 2," read an LFP statement.

"This evening, a minute of silence will be observed before the match between Evian and Lille, a game delayed from the 14th round of Ligue 1."

In a statement, Lille president Michel Seydoux expressed "his deepest sadness" at the events, while both clubs said their players will wear black armbands.
