Report: Mike Petke fired as New York Red Bulls head coach

Mike Petke was fired as head coach of Major League Soccer's New York Red Bulls on Tuesday, according to reports.

A team source told Metro New York that recently hired sporting director Ali Curtis met with Petke at Red Bull Arena and relieved him of his duties.

Petke, who played for the New York MetroStars at the start of his career and the Red Bulls at the end of it, took over the coaching role in 2011 and led the club to its first and only silverware by winning the Supporters' Shield in 2013.

The Red Bulls made the MLS Cup Eastern Conference finals during the 2014 season, but Petke, Thierry Henry and Tim Cahill lost to New England Revolution and failed to make the MLS Cup finals that were ultimately won by the LA Galaxy.

In addition to losing out on the MLS Cup this season, the Red Bulls also lost Henry to retirement. The report does not name a potential successor for Petke.
