Roger Espinoza returns to Sporting Kansas City

Honduran midfielder Roger Espinoza will return to Sporting Kansas City after the MLS club announced a new deal for 28-year-old on Tuesday.

Espinoza previously played for Sporting KC from 2008-2012 before joining Wigan in England.

He was a feature in the Wigan lineup in previous years and helped them win the FA Cup final over Manchester City in 2013. But he rarely featured for the Latics in the Championship this season and his contract was terminated last month.

During his time with KC, he was an MLS All-Star, scoring twice in 130 appearances.

"Roger was a big part of us establishing ourselves in Kansas City and Major League Soccer," Sporting KC Manager Peter Vermes said in a statement. "Now Roger returns to a club that has continued its evolution and he has the ability to help take us to the next level. It is rare for a player to leave a club and then come back, but this situation from day one has been great and we are very happy for Roger to don the Sporting Kansas City jersey again."

Espinoza has 45 caps for Honduras and appeared in the past two World Cups, as well as the 2012 Olympics.

"I'm thrilled to be back in Kansas City," Espinoza said. "I always knew I would come back some day and I could not be more excited to re-join this club. I'm ready to get back to work and help this team win another championship."
