Valentine's Day date for Singapore vs Japan in SEA Games warm-up

Singapore's U-23 side will play Asian powerhouses Japan next month as part of their preparations for June's Southeast Asian (SEA) Games on home soil.

Aide Iskandar's men will face the Japanese U-23s on Feb. 14 -- Valentine's Day -- at either Jalan Besar Stadium or Yishun Stadium.

While the date clashes with LionsXII's away match at Kelantan, some key international players from Fandi Ahmad's squad are expected to be released for the match.

Japan reached the quarterfinals of last year's Asian Games before losing to eventual champions and host nation, South Korea.

Both the Japanese and Singapore sides will take part in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-23 Championship qualifiers in Malaysia from Mar. 27 to 31.

"We all know Japan is one of the best in Asia, so it'll be a tough match," Aide told The New Paper. "But it's a great opportunity for our boys to see where they're at and I think it'll be a great experience for everyone.

"We need to play quality teams as part of our build up for the SEA Games to test ourselves against stronger teams so we can improve."

Before the friendly against Japan, the U-23 squad will have a two-week training camp at the Calista Luxury Resort in Antalya, Turkey, from Jan. 18 to Feb. 4.

Aide added: "Even though we've already lined up games against some top European clubs in our training camp in Turkey, we also need games like this, against the region's best, to get better.

"It's a rare chance to play a top team like Japan."

In the U-23 qualifiers, Singapore are in Group J with Laos, Mongolia and hosts China while Japan are in Group I with hosts Malaysia, Vietnam and Macau.

The winners of each group advance to the tournament finals in Qatar in Jan 2016, along with the five best second-placed sides.

The U-23 Championship is also a qualifying competition for the 2016 Rio Olympics, with the top three nations going as Asia's representatives.
