Spurs deny London-based NFL team might play at White Hart Lane

Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur dismissed reports that they are considering sharing their soon-to-be-redeveloped stadium with a London-based American NFL team.

Spurs are looking to rebuild their White Hart Lane stadium and are in the final stages of gaining planning clearance for a 56,250 seat state-of-the-art venue on land next to their current stadium, which was originally built in 1898.

There have been repeated newspaper rumours that an NFL franchise will soon be set up in London, with Wembley Stadium long believed to be the natural fit for a home venue after the successful staging of several regular season games at England's national stadium in recent years.

However, there are suggestions that the Football Association -- who are the major stakeholders in Wembley -- are reluctant to move the English national soccer team out of the venue on a permanent basis. That development has fuelled the idea that any potential London NFL team may have to consider two venues to play their matches.

A report in the Daily Telegraph newspaper on Friday claimed NFL chiefs were considering the revamped White Hart Lane as an option, but Spurs have been quick to dismiss any claim that they are in dialogue over such a proposal.

"We are not in discussions with the NFL regarding the use of the stadium for an NFL franchise," stated a Tottenham spokesman.

Tottenham are still trying to clear the final hurdles in what has been a long process to start building their new home, with the Archway Sheet Metal Works' company continuing to object to the development that will force them to sell their land to the football club.

The next phase of the legal battle is set to go to court in mid-January and the local manufacturing company could then lodge an appeal if they fail to get the result they are craving, thus delaying the construction plans yet again.
