Barcelona captain Xavi Hernandez says he and his team must bounce back from an awful 12-month period by winning a trophy in 2015.
Barca endured a disappointing 2014, losing the Copa del Rey final to Real Madrid and missing out on the Liga title on the last day to Atletico Madrid. Xavi personally endured a testing year, with added international pain as Spain exited the World Cup at the group stage in Brazil last summer.
Asked for his "Wishes for 2015" in a Sport interview, the veteran playmaker -- who turns 35 on Jan. 20 -- said the main aim for the year had to be to win some silverware.
"Good health and trophies," Xavi said. "We need that. We cannot allow ourselves another blank year. That is our principal objective.
"The season has begun very well, we are working as hard as possible. I am captain and have a responsibility which I take totally naturally, but I want above all to win trophies."
Xavi admitted 2014 was a poor year for him, saying: "It has not been an easy year -- very difficult on both sporting and personal levels. The only good decision has been to stay one more year here. I am very happy about that, but the rest was very messed up.
"The death of Tito [Vilanova]; the decision of the club to let go [of long-serving kitman] Txema Corbella, who is a close friend of mine; to not win a trophy with either Barca or the national team, the disappointment of the World Cup... also on a personal level not having played games as important as against Atletico Madrid [in May's La Liga last-day decider] and Chile [at the World Cup]. You learn from mistakes."
Barca have a tough start to the new year: they play at Real Sociedad on Sunday with Atletico Madrid then visiting the Camp Nou in La Liga on Jan. 11, and likely Copa del Rey games against either Atletico or Real Madrid looming should they defeat Elche over two legs in the last-16 tie.
"What is coming at us is brutal," Xavi said. "Real Sociedad, Atletico Madrid and the quarterfinals against Atletico or Real Madrid if we beat Elche. We cannot slip up because our aim is to reach March alive and with options in the three competitions."
The Catalan outfit's hopes of success have been hit by the Court of Arbitration for Sport's decision to deny its appeal of the transfer ban imposed by FIFA for breaking youth transfer regulations, which means no new players can be signed until 2016.
Xavi continued the club's line of argument that the punishment was unfair given Barca's reputation for their La Masia academy, but backed the club to prosper from the setback.
"The CAS decision has upset everyone," he added. "I expected them to be less harsh. As a 'cule' (Barca fan) I find it an enormous injustice because there is no club in the world who looks after its youth system better, we are models in this. But we will come out of this as we came out of other things. It will make us even stronger."
