Mexico's Miguel Layun finalizes move to Granada by way of Watford

Mexico international Miguel Layun said goodbye on Wednesday to the Club America and finalized a move to La Liga's Granada, though he'll spend the remainder of the season playing for Watford in the English Championship.

No financial details of the transfer were revealed, but Yon de Luisa, chairman of America owners Futbol de Televisa, told local media that Layun was not out on loan but a "short sale." Granada, though, reported the deal is for five years.

"Club America say goodbye to one of the last idols of Americanism," the Mexican team said Tuesday in a statement. "Miguel Layun leaves our colors in search of a dream and a new adventure in European football."

Granada are currently threatened by relegation, in 18th place in the La Liga table. One of the club's shareholders, Italian businessman Giampaolo Pozzo, also owns Watford, for whom Layun will play in the remaining games this season.

Watford are fifth in the Championship table with 41 points, seven points behind leaders Bournemouth. Layun could arrive in time to face face Chelsea in the FA Cup on Jan. 4.

It is the second stint in Europa for Layun, after a brief time with Italy's Atalanta in 2009. He returned to America a year later, and his performance earned him a call-up to the Mexican national team, with whom he started in the World Cup this year.

America this month won the 12th league title in their history.

"Thank you first of all for all the love you have given me," said Layun in a video released by the Mexican team.
