Brendan Rodgers not planning for major January transfer business

LIVERPOOL -- Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers says he is planning "little, if any" transfer activity in January as he plans a push for a top-four Premier League spot.

Reports on Wednesday suggested that the Reds were considering a move for Villarreal's Argentine forward Luciano Vietto.

But Rodgers, who signed nine players during the summer, thinks his squad is strong enough to push up from their current league position of eighth as they head into 2015.

He said: "There won't be much activity for us in January. We brought in a lot of players during the summer who we feel can develop and those players are starting to adapt to life here at Liverpool and our way of working.

"There won't be a lot of transfer activity from us over January, if any. My job is to coach and manage the players who are here, and work hard at maximising the talent they have."

Rodgers said that he did not feel January was the best time to buy players -- although he did bring in Daniel Sturridge from Chelsea and Philippe Coutinho from Inter Milan during the winter window two years ago.

The Reds were stung in January last year when a bid to sign Ukraine winger Yevhen Konoplyanka from Dnipro fell through at the last minute when club owner Ihor Kolomoyskyi refused to sanction the deal.

Rodgers is not completely ruling out the possibility of moves in January, but is planning to tread carefully.

He said: "I don't think it's a good time to spend. If you look at last January, we didn't bring anyone in. My job was to coach the players we had brought in during the summer, to manage them.

"The beauty of our owners is that if there is someone available, they will always back what we want to do.

"If there is someone there who we felt would improve us for the short term and the long term, then we'll do that. But I'm happy with how the group is progressing.

"It's been a tough start to the season for us, but I can see our game coming back, and the confidence returning to the team.

"I don't want to stockpile players here. We've got some outstanding young talent. I sent young Jordon Ibe out on loan to get experience and he's having a wonderful season at Derby. Andre Wisdom is out at West Brom and working really well.

"My focus will always be on what we've got within, in terms of young talent and the other players. If there's something available that can improve us, we'll take it to the owners and look at it from there."
