Swansea's Jonjo Shelvey denies elbowing Liverpool's Emre Can

Swansea midfielder Jonjo Shelvey denied intentionally elbowing Liverpool's Emre Can during Monday's Premier League clash at Anfield.

Shelvey, a former Liverpool player, appeared to fling an elbow into Can's face during Liverpool's 4-1 victory, but escaped punishment from referee Andre Marriner.

After the match, Shelvey defended himself on Twitter, writing:

Later in the match, Raheem Sterling slapped Swansea defender Federico Fernandez, and Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers argued Marriner was correct to not send either player off.

"I have seen the two [incidents]," Rodgers said. "Jonjo has flung his arm out and caught Emre on the side of his head.

"Young Raheem's incident, the centre-half has slapped him on the side of the head and he has put his hand up and slapped him on the side of the head.

"I think the referee has called both right and got on with the game."

Swansea manager Garry Monk said he had not seen Shelvey's elbow but praised the midfielder for his performance.

"I thought he played fantastic tonight," Monk said. "He was very good, the Jonjo I know and have seen and have tried many times to get out of him. Getting on the ball, showing quality of his passing and the work rate and I thought that did very well tonight."

Monk was disappointed with the errors which cost his side at Anfield.

"I thought we played OK, we had the most possession but really we made too many mistakes and that is what cost us in the end.

"If you make mistakes at this level against a talented Liverpool side they will get punished."

He also defended goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, who had been in fine form, adding: "Fabianski has been absolutely fantastic for us and unfortunately there will be a point in the season when a goalkeeper makes a mistake and generally it results in a goal."
