Harry Redknapp rips QPR's 'atrocious' defending in loss to Arsenal

Harry Redknapp described defending Queens Park Rangers' defending as "atrocious" and "criminal," and said he was disappointed not to come away with a point against 10-man Arsenal on Boxing Day.

Armand Traore's early trip on Alexis Sanchez led to a missed penalty, but the Chilean made QPR's lax defending hurt later in the first half when no-one picked up his run before he Chilean guided a cushioned header into the far corner.

"It was a needless penalty to give away and then we defended badly for the first goal," Redknapp said in his post-game news conference. "It was atrocious defending from us to concede that goal."

And the Rangers boss later told the club's official website: "We got away with the penalty," he said. "There's no need for Armand [Traore] to go to ground there. We got away with that but then we've fallen asleep at the back for their first goal. It was a criminal bit of defending."

But Redknapp was perhaps more upset to concede Arsenal's second goal, which came after Olivier Giroud was sent off for a head-butt.

"Once they went down to 10 men, you've really got to make sure you keep it tight," Redknapp said. "The one thing we didn't want to do was concede another goal. To let the second goal in when we did was criminal."

QPR fought back to make it 2-1 on Charlie Austin's penalty, but Redknapp was also furious that Rangers were denied a second spot-kick after Kieran Gibbs tackled Bobby Zamora without the ball.

"It was a blatant penalty. I've looked at that and when Bobby came in he couldn't believe he didn't get the decision. It was a penalty. He got dragged down," Redknapp said.

"It wasn't until we got back to 2-1 that we suddenly started to take the game to them. I felt we weren't positive enough at 1-0 against 10 men. For them to score was the worst possible thing. To go two down was a massive blow.

"You have to come away with something. This was a good opportunity against 10 men to pick up a point here. We've got two home games now [against Crystal Palace and Swansea] and we have to pick up some points in those."
