Sami Khedira keen to extend Real Madrid deal

Sami Khedira has told Stuttgarter Nachrichten he is eager to sign a new contract at Real Madrid despite claims he has agreed a move to Bayern Munich.

Khedira's current contract is due to expire in the summer and Cadena SER recently reported that he had agreed to join Bayern on a free transfer, but the German champions denied that was the case and the midfielder has now said he remains keen to extend his stay at the Bernabeu.

"If we can reach a solution, I'll be very happy," he said in quotes translated by AS.

Khedira missed large parts of last season with an anterior cruciate ligament tear suffered in November 2013 and, after returning to fitness in time to help Germany to success at the World Cup, suffered a fresh setback in August.

However, he says he has now recovered his fitness and is confident he can establish himself in Carlo Ancelotti's first-team plans.

"I am back at a good physical level and for that reason, I'm confident that soon I will get more of a chance to play," he said.

Khedira now faces competition for a place in the Madrid midfield from Germany teammate Toni Kroos, but he insisted he is "a friend of strong competition" and praised the former Bayern star.

"He is doing extraordinarily well," he said. "He has only been at the club for less than half a year and he is already a key component in how the team functions."

The 27-year-old also suggested he could return to former club Stuttgart before he retires.

"I'll always carry VfB in my heart," he said. "I know that they've been having a few problems but, in life and in football, sometimes you cannot say no to certain things. Why would I close the door if such an opportunity arose?"

Meanwhile, Khedira accepted that Germany must get back on track after their disappointing results since their World Cup triumph.

"We all know that we have to improve a bit," he said. "We have some decisive games coming up and we all need to play our part in helping the team to continue believing in ourselves because we want to qualify for Euro 2016. The victory in the friendly over Spain was a step in the right direction."

Asked why he does not sing the German national anthem before games, he replied: "For me, that is clear -- it is out of respect for my second homeland, Tunisia. I don't sing either national anthem."

However, he added: "When we played against the United States at the World Cup, Jurgen Klinsmann sang the German and the American anthems, and I thought to myself, 'That's a good solution.'"
