Mathieu Debuchy: Arsenal keep dropping points 'stupidly'

Arsenal defender Mathieu Debuchy believes the Gunners have "dropped too many points stupidly" in the Premier League this season.

Debuchy and his teammates head into the busy run of Christmas sitting sixth in the Premier League table, four points outside the top four. They would, however, have at least been level on points with fifth-placed Southampton but for Martin Skrtel's 97th-minute equaliser for Liverpool in Sunday's 2-2 draw at Anfield.

The 29-year-old said such late lapses were all too frequent, and that more concentration would be required at home to Queens Park Rangers before Arsene Wenger's men head to West Ham United and Southampton, the two sides directly above them, during the hectic and potentially crucial festive period.

"It's a difficult run of fixtures, because they're always difficult games there," he told L'Equipe. "They're solid on their own turf. But, at the same time, it'll be a great opportunity to overtake them. We no longer have a choice. We have dropped too many points stupidly, like at Liverpool. If we want to finish in the top four, we have to win."

Debuchy has played just six Premier League games this season due to a serious ankle injury, and his last two appearances have been as a makeshift centre-back due to other defenders being sidelined.

"We've been quite unlucky, because sometimes we have been missing five first-team regulars at the same time," the France international, who moved to North London from Newcastle United in the summer, said. "But we're not worried. There are a lot of games left. We're going to play three during the festive period."
