Pardew: Possession key at Old Trafford (1:11)

Alan Pardew believes that his players should draw on their experiences of good performances at Old Trafford as Newcastle prepare to play Manchester United on Boxing Day. (1:11)

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has thanked Sir Alex Ferguson for supporting and praising him, but also feels under pressure to justify his predecessor's faith.

Ferguson, who won 13 Premier League titles and two Champions Leagues during his 26-year reign at Old Trafford, hailed Van Gaal for bringing the best out of Wayne Rooney and turning Michael Carrick into "the best English central midfield player."

And the 72-year-old Scot sympathised with Van Gaal over United's injury problems this season, suggesting his former team will improve when everyone is fully fit because the Dutchman is a "great coach."

Van Gaal said in a news conference on Tuesday: "It is fantastic when you come to Manchester United. You hope, because I know Sir Alex, you hope that he shall support you and when he is supporting you, not only this week but also in other [press] conferences he gave, he showed a lot of confidence and belief in me.

"That I need, as a coach of Manchester United. You need the belief and support of managers as Sir Alex but also from [directors] Bobby Charlton and David Gill.

"They have the belief so I am very happy with that. Then you can work more easily. But it is also a pressure because he believes in you and you have to get results."

United host Newcastle on Boxing Day, and Van Gaal is happy that his side are making their home ground a tough place to visit again.

They were beaten seven times at Old Trafford last season and lost their first league game this term against Swansea, but have won seven of their last eight matches on home soil.

And Van Gaal added: "We want to build a fortress at Old Trafford, and we have made it that already because we have won a lot, and with great results, 3-0 [against Liverpool and Hull] and 4-0 [against QPR], and I am happy with that."
