Real Betis rehire former coach Pepe Mel as manager

Real Betis have hired Pepe Mel as coach, the club confirmed on Saturday.

The Madrid-born Mel will take charge of the Segunda Division club on Monday in a bid to lead them back to the top flight.

The agreement between Betis and Mel is until the end of the season, with an option of two more if he achieves promotion.

Mel, 51, was a Betis player between 1989 and 1993 and coached the club between July 2010 and December 2013. In this spell he was seen as an outstanding leader of the club and helped them in to the Europa League.

He was dismissed just over a year ago after several failures and took over West Brom from January until May of this season before leaving by mutual consent.

Mel and his staff, former by Roberto Rios and David Gómez, will watch Sunday's match against Racing from the stands at the Benito Villamarín before taking charge on Monday.
