Eric Abidal to announce retirement on Friday, says Olympiakos coach Michel

Eric Abidal will call time on his playing career on Friday, Olympiakos coach Michel has confirmed.

Abidal, 35, will formally announce his retirement at a news conference scheduled for Friday, according to reports in France, ending a career which saw him win four league titles and two Champions Leagues during his six years at the Camp Nou.

In March of 2011, during his time in Catalonia, Abidal underwent surgery to remove a tumour on his liver. However, he made an unexpected recovery in time to play the full 90 minutes of Barca's Champions League final win over Manchester United two months later at Wembley, where he lifted the trophy with club captain Carles Puyol.

A year later, he underwent a successful liver transplant operation.

Michel acknowledged the former France defender, who announced his retirement from international football in August, will finally hang up his boots.

"He took his decision to leave Olympiakos two months ago," the 51-year-old coach told Nova TV. "I am proud to have been his coach this season. Personal decisions take precedent over those on the pitch."

Abidal, who was capped 67 times by France, signed a two-year contract with the Piraeus club this summer after spending a year back at former side Monaco.

This season he has started eight of Olympiakos' 14 matches in the Greek Super League, as well as all six of their Champions League group-stage matches.

He made what is expected to be his final competitive appearance on the pitch in Wednesday's 2-0 league win against Panionios.

Abidal is tipped to return to the Camp Nou where the Blaugrana president Josep Maria Bartomeu said last week he would find a place for the defender should he wish following his retirement.
