Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers needs results, says Jamie Carragher

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes Brendan Rodgers is under pressure to keep his job at Anfield.

Sunday's 3-0 defeat at Manchester United left the Reds languishing in 10th place in the Premier League, seven points off fourth place and 10 behind Louis van Gaal's side who sit third.

It was their seventh loss in 16 league matches this season, bringing Liverpool their lowest points total after as many games for 50 years, and swiftly follows their exit from the Champions League at the group stage last week.

And Carragher now thinks the club's owners, John W Henry and Fenway Sports Group, could be tempted to make a change.

"Brendan Rodgers is under pressure," Carragher told Sky Sports. "The owners were ruthless with Kenny [Dalglish] and Roy [Hodgson]. You go out against Bournemouth [in Wednesday's Capital One Cup quarterfinal] and then you have Arsenal. He was Manager of the Year but he has to get results.

"You expect them to do well after spending that kind of money. They are looking to be in the top four but they have failed in the Champions League. It will be hard to catch United because they are not in Europe. Arsenal will be going for fourth as well. If they don't get top four then he will be under pressure."

At the same stage last season, Liverpool had 33 points from 16 games and sat in second place, but are 12 points and 24 goals worse off in the current campaign.

They created several good chances at Old Trafford, with United goalkeeper David de Gea voted man of the match after denying both Raheem Sterling and Mario Balotelli on three occasions.

United punished them in ruthless fashion with goals from Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Robin van Persie earning a sixth straight win which keeps the Red Devils in third place.

"I've not been part of a team that has come to Old Trafford and created that many chances, but you've got to defend well too," Carragher added.

"There are two sides to a game. They've conceded three goals away from home. Only QPR have conceded more goals away from home and they haven't picked up a point yet away from home. It's not something new under Rodgers and it's got to stop. Eradicate the individual errors.

"There's panic in the Liverpool defence and that's one of the reasons why Simon Mignolet has come out of the team as he was creating that panic. That's the problem at Liverpool.

"[Dejan] Lovren is another one. Every time the ball goes near him, you fear there's going to be a mistake or a poor clearance and that's what we saw today with the last goal."
