Brendan Rodgers to leave out Simon Mignolet for 'indefinite period'

MANCHESTER -- Brendan Rodgers revealed Simon Mignolet will not get an immediate recall to the Liverpool team after being dropped for the 3-0 defeat to Manchester United.

Brad Jones played his first league game since March 2013 at Old Trafford and manager Rodgers will keep faith with the Australian for Wednesday's Capital One Cup tie against Bournemouth.

And he said that Mignolet, who had not missed a Premier League game since joining from Sunderland, will be out of the side for an "indefinite period" as he hinted the Belgian will not be recalled soon.

He said in a news conference: "I said to Simon it was for an indefinite period. He has played in a lot of games and Brad in my first year came in and did very well. It is something that can happen to keepers, taking them out of the firing line and give them time to reflect. Brad is very experienced and was always going to play in the Bournemouth game.

"Simon has been fine. He is a really good professional. I spoke to him and he accepted it. Brad Jones didn't have much to do other than take the ball out of the net.

"It was giving an opportunity to someone. I just felt after the Basel game and reflecting after that that I needed to make the change."

Rodgers insisted he will not rest Raheem Sterling, who missed several clear-cut chances in his role as a makeshift striker as Liverpool named a team without an out-and-out centre-forward.

He added: "I thought the kid was outstanding. I asked him to play central where he could penetrate. He is a wonderful young player. There is a point where he will get a breather but at the moment he is our main catalyst."

Rodgers felt the scoreline at Old Trafford was unfair on his team after Wayne Rooney, an offside Juan Mata and Robin van Persie scored while David De Gea made a series of saves from Sterling and substitute Mario Balotelli.

And the Liverpool manager claimed his side "could not have done any more" as they suffered their seventh league defeat of the campaign.

He said: "I didn't think we deserved to be on the end of the scoreline. They were much more clinical when they needed to be. It is not often you come here and create that many chances. It was not a 3-0 match.

"For the goalkeeper to get man of the match tells you everything. We created more chances today than for five or six games. I was pleased with that aspect but disappointed with the first and third goals. The second was clearly offside. That is a poor decision. I don't think with the players we have we could have done any more."
