Laurent Blanc is not up to the PSG job, says ex-sports minister

Former French sports minister Bernard Laporte has said Laurent Blanc "is not up to being PSG coach" and branded club president Nasser Al Khelaifi "a buffoon."

Blanc has come under fire after a 3-1 Champions league defeat at Barcelona on Wednesday left PSG as runners-up in Group F and potentially facing a testing round of 16 tie as a consequence.

The manager, who replaced Carlo Ancelotti in summer 2013, won last season's French title with a record points tally and reached the Champions League quarterfinals.

But Laporte was scathing in his assessment of the former France boss, with RMC quoting him as saying: "I am going to tell you the truth: Laurent is not up to being PSG coach.

"I'm not talking about his technical qualities -- he does not have the human qualities needed to be PSG coach. Give me Mourinho, Ancelotti, the guys who know. Laurent is a great guy, I love him, but he is not up to being PSG coach."

Laporte's remarks came as L'Equipe suggested on Friday that the position of the coach could be in jeopardy, while Le Parisien claimed PSG had approached Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone and Ancelotti.

But Laporte poured scorn on Parc des Princes decision-maker Al Khelaifi, who had voiced his dissatisfaction with the performance at the Camp Nou.

"He's a buffoon," Laporte, now the coach of rugby team Toulon, said. "He decides nothing. What does he know about football? Isn't it he who should be fired? Let's stop this nonsense."
