Laurent Blanc says PSG's risks at Barcelona failed to pay off

PSG coach Laurent Blanc said the risks his side needed to take to earn a result at Barcelona did not pay off in a 3-1 defeat.

After Zlatan Ibrahimovic gave the visitors the lead, each of Barcelona's South American superstars -- Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez -- scored to allow the hosts to win the Champions League group.

Blanc said PSG wasted too many opportunities to earn the needed result at the Camp Nou.

"We feel frustrated because we had an idea of how the match would go but we lacked quality going forward," Blanc said. "We could have scored to make it 2-2 with the chances we had.

"We lacked efficiency in attack and defence. We lacked the right level. We had to take risks, we ended up playing four forwards. We wanted a good result and we wanted to take risks. We almost scored to make it 2-0 but it did not happen.

"Great players turn a small chance into a goal, into a great goal. We tried to make it 2-2 but we lost 3-1 unfortunately."

Blanc revealed that he hoped to sit back and strike at Barcelona on the counterattack, but the plan changed when PSG unexpectedly saw more of the ball than their opponents.

"We had planned to play on the counterattack but I think in the first half we had more chances than Barcelona. We made life difficult for them," Blanc said.

"We focused on the midfield and it did work more or less well. We lacked something, though, and we could have defended better."

PSG now enter Monday's draw as group runners-up and will face a European giant in the round of 16 -- one of Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, or Porto.

"It is a disadvantage to finish second in the group," Blanc said. "In the next match you will have to face a big team. I wanted a positive result and to top the group but it did not happen so we will have to wait patiently for the draw."

Ibrahimovic said PSG could not afford to make mistakes against Barcelona in their own home.

"We started well, we created a lot of chances and we managed to score from one of them. After that we were punished and lost the game," Ibrahimovic said.

"I know how it is to play at the Camp Nou -- you have to keep your mistakes to a minimum and only then can you succeed. We did not do that today.

The Swedish striker fought through an Achilles injury to play on Wednesday, but he said it will improve in time.

"My Achilles is still not 100 percent, but it is good enough for a game," he said. "I just have to take one game at a time and hope it will get better. It is still not completely healed, but it's nothing I want to complain about, it's good enough to play."
