Swansea appeal against Lukasz Fabianski red card vs. West Ham

Swansea City will appeal against Lukasz Fabianski's red card after the goalkeeper was sent off during the club's 3-1 Premier League defeat at West Ham on Sunday.

Fabianski, 29, was shown a straight red card in the 68th minute by referee Chris Foy after the keeper was adjudged to have denied Diafra Sakho a clear goalscoring opportunity, though the striker continued his run and saw his shot hit the post.

Swans boss Garry Monk said after the game that his side intended to contest the punishment, and statement on the club's official website on Monday read: "Swansea City can confirm that the club will be appealing the red card issued to goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski against West Ham on Sunday.

"The club officially informed the Football Association by today's 1 p.m. deadline."

The Poland international is currently banned for Swansea's home league tie against Tottenham on Sunday, but the FA will rule on the case beforehand.

Monk believes that Foy's decision to send off Fabianski was incorrect, stating: "If you look at the build-up to it, [Sakho] knocks the ball past the keeper with his hand.

"I don't think we dealt with the situation leading up to that point very well but before Fabianski makes any contact whatsoever, the player knocks it past with his left hand.

"Realistically it should have been a free kick to us. It wasn't a clear goalscoring opportunity either -- when you look at it with the replays, it isn't [a red card]."
