Mexico coach Miguel Herrera says he's signed deal through 2018 World Cup

Mexico national team coach Miguel Herrera says he has already signed a contract extension with the Mexican Football Federation to manage El Tri through the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Herrera made the announcement on Wednesday during a ceremony to honor him at Mexico City's Paseo de las Luminarias, the country's equivalent to the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

"I have always felt secure, this has been talked about for a while now and we had verbally agreed on the contract previously. It was a question of putting in on paper," Herrera told reporters. "But I will only stay if I bring results."

Herrera said he verbally agreed with the federation before the team headed to friendlies in Europe last month, but the formalities were not completed until Wednesday.

Herrera said his goals continue to be "the regular ones."

"To win the Gold Cup, and as I have always said to win Copa America and the main goal, to qualify for the World Cup," Herrera said.

A big part of Mexico's success rests with goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, who finally debuted on Wednesday for Malaga.

But Herrera said Ochoa's playing time for his club is unlikely to affect his role as Mexico's No. 1.

"Whether or not he plays or doesn't play with Malaga, he will always be under consideration for El Tri," Herrera said.
