Red Bulls give Bradley Wright-Phillips new deal as designated player

MLS top scorer Bradley Wright-Phillips signed a new contract with the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday that makes him a designated player.

Wright-Phillips, 29, led Major League Soccer in scoring in his first full year in the U.S. with 27 goals in the regular season.

That mark tied an MLS record, and the Englishman also scored four times during the MLS Cup playoffs.

"Following his outstanding performances in 2014, which produced 31 goals in all competitions, the club has decided to make Bradley Wright-Phillips a MLS Designated Player," Red Bulls sporting director Andy Roxburgh said in a statement.

"Bradley is not only a prolific goalscorer, he is an excellent professional and a great team player who will be a big asset to the club in the coming seasons."

Wright-Phillips will take an open DP slot. Another of the Red Bulls' slots became available when Thierry Henry announced his departure from the team on Monday. Tim Cahill is the only other designated player on the Red Bulls' payroll.

Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

On Tuesday, the Red Bulls announced that they would not pick up contract options for forward Saer Sene, midfielders Bobby Convey and Marius Obekop, and defenders Kosuke Kimura, Damien Perrinelle, Ibrahim Sekagaya and Richard Eckersley.

Obekop, Perrinelle and Sekagya could still return to the club under new contracts next season.
