Monaco facing FFP punishment, L'Equipe claims

L'Equipe has reported that Monaco can expect to be punished by UEFA due to their infringement of financial fair play regulations, while the Ligue 1 side's vice-president has told his underperforming players to "get the job done."

Monaco are one of seven clubs, including Liverpool, Roma and Inter Milan, whose finances have been placed under close scrutiny by UEFA since the start of the season.

Last season's Ligue 1 runners-up, who will seek to reach the Champions League knockout stages against Zenit St Petersburg next week, have appeared twice in front of the UEFA body that oversees club's finances this season to shed light on their economic status.

The club has reportedly failed to convince European football's governing body their contract that gives a marketing agency a share in the club in exchange for 100 million euros should be included when calculations are made to decide whether or not the principality outfit are within FFP guidelines.

Last season, Paris Saint-Germain's lucrative contract with the Qatar Tourism Authority was adjudged to fall outside FFP regulations, and saw the French champions fined and forced to reduce their Champions League squad size as well as restrict their transfer dealings.

L'Equipe reported on Wednesday that PSG remain under those restrictions from UEFA for this season and the two upcoming transfer windows.

While PSG will go top of the table with victory at Lille on Wednesday, Monaco defeated Lens on Tuesday to register their first win in five league outings and move up to a modest eighth place.

Their domestic results are in stark contrast to those in the Champions League, where they have twice beaten Bayer Leverkusen and need just a point from their final Group C match with Zenit to join the German outfit in the last 16.

"I'm not annoyed, but I am counting on the players to have the same level of concentration, the same motivation in Ligue 1 as in the Champions League," Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev told the media after Tuesday's league encounter at the Stade Louis II. "Up till now, it hasn't been the case.

"Our performances in the two competitions are different, but I am sure we'll manage to do it. We have all the qualities required."

He added: "I am convinced we are going to get the results, and that our strikers will start scoring again. With regard to transfers and the January window, it's not on the agenda. It's up to the players to get the job done."
