Vincent Kompany a major doubt for Manchester City against Roma

MANCHESTER -- Vincent Kompany is a major doubt for Manchester City's Champions League decider against Roma.

The centre-back and captain will miss the Premier League champions' Wednesday game at Sunderland and their home match against Everton on Saturday.

But his hamstring injury could force him to miss next Wednesday's trip to the Stadio Olimpico, when City might be without three of their premier players.

David Silva might not be fit after a knee injury while Yaya Toure serves the second of a three-match ban for his sending off against CSKA Moscow.

Manager Manuel Pellegrini admitted he is worried the Belgian will not be available, telling a news conference: "It depends what degree of muscle injury he has. It's very difficult to know in this moment if he can play against Rome.

"Vincent Kompany is not able to play against Sunderland or against Everton, that's sure. We'll see if he arrives against Roma. That will depend on the opinion of the doctor."

Silva has missed City's last six matches after being injured in the Capital One Cup defeat to Newcastle and Pellegrini admitted it is unlikely he will be available to face Everton.

He added: "David is improving. We'll see on Thursday if he can be in the squad list but I'm not sure, I think it's difficult."

Pellegrini also defended centre-back Eliaquim Mangala, whose difficult start to his City career continued with a red card in Sunday's 3-0 win at Southampton.

The Chilean argued the Frenchman, who is the most expensive defender in the history of English football, sacrificed himself to stop Shane Long scoring an equaliser when he was dismissed.

He explained: "A lot of players need more time to settle in the Premier League because it's a difficult league. In the other sense, I don't think the foul that Mangala made was not a good foul.

"Maybe it was a tactical foul or maybe he thought the player [Long] would score if he didn't arrive to the ball.

"It's just half a second to arrive late at the ball. He tried to win the ball because it was a very dangerous play for Southampton. He arrived late, it was a second yellow card and he had to go out. In the game he was not playing badly."
