Luis Enrique: Barcelona not planning to sign Thomas Vermaelen replacement

Barcelona boss Luis Enrique has said he has no plans to sign another defender after Thomas Vermaelen was ruled out for up to six months.

Vermaelen, a summer signing from Arsenal, has yet to make an appearance for Barca and could now miss the entire season as he is to undergo surgery on a thigh problem.

Barca have been handed a transfer ban by FIFA, imposed for breaking youth transfer rules, but have appealed and the case will be heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Dec. 5.

CAS says it will give a fast-track verdict before the transfer window opens in January

Marca had also reported that they were considering applying for special permission to bring in an emergency signing before January to compensate for the Belgian's long-term injury.

However, Enrique told a news conference on Saturday: "There's no intention of reinforcements in principle, but what plans the club have is another thing. We have no doubts that Vermaelen will be a good signing for us."

He added: "In football, injuries are normal and players have to go through these processes. That has been the case with Thomas since he arrived at the club. The team is playing well and we have to support the player. With the speed at which time passes, he'll be with us soon.
