Three men were injured when a gang of around 100 people, armed with knives and sticks, burst into the coffee bar at Argentine club River Plate's Monumental stadium to attack a rival gang, Reuters has reported.

A statement on the club's official website after the incident on Tuesday said River Plate had been "the victim of an organised attack."

The statement added: "The actions, lasting exactly seven minutes, were clearly organised, premeditated and planned, as proved by footage recorded on security cameras handed over to the law."

According to local media reports, members of the gang rampaged through the coffee bar shouting threats to kill.

Sports newspaper Ole said the attack had been carried out by barrabrava (hooligan) River fans against their rival gang, with the violence sparked by a dispute over the sale of match tickets.

It happened two days before the second leg of River's Copa Sudamericana semi-final at home to Boca Juniors.
