Brad Guzan praises Fraser Forster ahead of Villa-Saints showdown

Brad Guzan believes Fraser Forster can rival Joe Hart for the England number one shirt and praised the impact of the Southampton goalkeeper.

The 26-year-old has conceded just five goals in the Barclays Premier League this season after a summer move from Celtic.

He was part of England's World Cup squad in Brazil and made his third appearance for the Three Lions in Tuesday's 3-1 win in Scotland.

Forster and Southampton face Aston Villa and fellow goalkeeper Guzan in Birmingham on Monday. And Villa's American shot-stopper said England are blessed to have Forster.

Guzan said: "I think he is a very good goalkeeper, Joe is a good goalkeeper and England are fortunate to have two keepers -- along with Ben Foster -- who play week in, week out in the Premier League and playing for top teams.

"That's important. Sometimes Joe gets some unfair criticism but Fraser has done a really good job at Southampton and he is proving that he is a top goalkeeper.

"You look at Southampton as a whole and how he fits into that team and he has done a really good job.

"The record and the clean sheets speak for themselves. He is a big part of that, you tip your hat to him because it's not always easy coming from any league into the Premier League and adjusting. He has done a really good job."

Southampton have won 11 of their last 12 games to be unlikely top four contenders after a summer overhaul.

In came Forster, Graziano Pelle, Ryan Bertrand and Dusan Tadic -- who Villa tried to sign in 2013 -- as Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Dejan Lovren left.

Head coach Ronald Koeman also replaced Mauricio Pochettino who joined Tottenham, but Guzan is not surprised at Southampton's form.

He said: "I don't know if there were problems, they sold half their team in the summer but I don't know if that's considered a problem or not. I guess it's a good thing when other clubs want your players, you are doing something right.

"That speaks about the season they had last year. Whether you go on a run of one game, six or eight, if you take one game at a time there's no reason why you can't pick up results one after another.

"Can they carry it on? Who's to say no but hopefully come Monday we can take something off them."
