Safuwan: Team unity will help Singapore win Suzuki Cup

Singapore centre-back Safuwan Baharudin believes the closely-knit national team can go on to win the AFF Suzuki Cup for a record fifth time.

The Lions, who won the elite ASEAN competition in 1998, 2004, 2007 and 2012, are co-hosts in 2014. They play their opening Group B game against Thailand on Sunday at the National Stadium.

"We know how to work with one another," Baharudin told the New Paper. "We've spent a lot of time with each other. This unity is our weapon. We were not the best team in terms of technique or tactics in 2012. But we worked as a team. Good individuals might win matches, but only a united team can win championships," said LionsXII centre-back Baharudin, 23, who played a key role in the 2012 title triumph.

Baharudin's captain, midfielder Shahril Ishak, also endorsed the team's unity in the report as coach Bernd Stange's men prepare to create ASEAN history. "In this team, we believe in one another," said Ishak. "Playing in front of home fans at the National Stadium will give us the extra boost."

Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) midfielder Ishak, 30, has led by example in fostering a team ethic in the dressing room. Despite being an attacking midfielder, Ishak has repeatedly involved himself in defensive duties during the pre-Suzuki Cup friendlies which The Lions played.

Other seniors in the dressing room such as goalkeeper Hassan Sunny, centre-back Baihakki Khaizan and midfielder Hariss Harun have also contributed towards fostering team spirit.

LionsXII centre-back Khaizan has been a model professional following the public dressing down he got from German national coach Stange following his defensive blunder in Singapore's 2-2 draw against Macau last month. The Lions had thrown away a 2-0 lead in the game, which prompted Stange's reaction.

Khaizan's mature approach exemplifies The Lions' team ethic, which is crucial in their attempt to win a fifth title in 2014.
