Bayern Munich's Philipp Lahm out for three months with fractured ankle

Bayern Munich have announced that skipper Philipp Lahm will be out for three months after suffering a fractured ankle in training.

On their official Twitter account, the Bundesliga champions confirmed that Lahm would undergo an operation after suffering the injury.

The post read: "Big blow for Philipp #Lahm: The captain has suffered a fractured ankle. He needs an operation and will be out for around 3 months."

Bayern -- who announced earlier in the day that the versatile Lahm had suffered "a serious injury in training" -- had at first said a full diagnosis was not expected until Tuesday evening.

After confirming the nature of the injury and extent of the time he was likely to face on the sidelines, they posted a get well message to the skipper.

Former Germany captain Lahm retired from international football after the World Cup win in the summer to dedicate himself to club football.

His Munich boss Pep Guardiola described him as one of the greatest stars in the club's history after he struck the first brace of his career in the recent 6-0 thrashing of Werder Bremen.

Guardiola -- who has previously called him the "most intelligent player" he has ever coached -- told Bayern's official website: "I believe he's one of the five best players in the history of Bayern Munich. It's a great honour to be his coach."
