Metzelder: Podolski may need to leave Arsenal (1:12)

Former Germany international Christoph Metzelder believes Lukas Podolski may have to leave Arsenal to keep his place in the national side. (1:12)

Schalke director of sport Horst Heldt has played down speculation that the Bundesliga club could sign either Chelsea's Andre Shurrle or Arsenal's Lukas Podolski in the winter transfer window.

The players, both Germany internationals, have been linked with moves away from their clubs, where neither is currently a regular in the starting lineup.

But Heldt was adamant that they were not targets for Schalke, and also scotched talk that Bayern Munich's Switzerland international Xherdan Shaqiri could be another target.

"We're not considering Andre Schurrle at all, and the same goes for Xherdan Shaqiri and Lukas Podolski." he told Sport Bild.

Germany coach Joachim Low has said he believes Podoslki should consider his future at Arsenal if he fails to find a way back into the first team, but Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has said the player will not be going anywhere in the winter.

"It is not established at all that he will leave at Christmas," Wenger told beIN SPORTS. "He is not for sale and there is no offer."
