Man United's Daley Blind prefers midfield role to playing in defence

Daley Blind believes he is at his best in midfield, despite being used by Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal as a centre-back against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Blind, 24, started his United career as a holding midfielder -- the role he normally occupied for previous club Ajax.

However, he played as a left wing-back or on the left of three centre-backs when he helped Van Gaal's Netherlands come third in the summer's World Cup.

And with Marcos Rojo injured and the United boss preferring to select a left-footer as his left-sided centre back, Blind was paired with Paddy McNair in the middle of the defence for the 1-0 win over Palace.

"I think midfield is a good position for me and it's also where I can help the team the most," Blind told United's official website.

"Maybe my qualities are better for that position but, if the trainer needs me for the left full-back position, then I will play there. It is no problem for me.

"I think I'm a player who keeps the ball and helps the rest of the team. I'm somebody who tries to play the easy pass instead of the difficult option, but it's also there that I have to improve. I always try to do what the coach asks."
