Sampdoria chief Massimo Ferrero faces racism inquiry

ROME -- The Italian football federation has opened a disciplinary case against Sampdoria president Massimo Ferrero for a discriminatory comment aimed at his Inter Milan colleague.

Last month, Ferrero told former Inter president Massimo Moratti to "kick out that Filipino" in reference to Indonesian entrepreneur and current Inter president Erick Thohir, in the latest racism gaffe to hit Italian football.

Ferrero later apologised for the remark, saying he was merely trying to praise Moratti.

Ferrero and Sampdoria will now face a case before the federation's in-house discipline court.

Meanwhile, federation president Carlo Tavecchio is serving a six-month UEFA and FIFA ban following a racist comment during his election campaign.

The Italian federation dropped its own racism inquiry into Tavecchio.
