Vicente del Bosque: Diego Costa omission 'best for his health'

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque has said he was pleased to see Chelsea striker Diego Costa looking "very good" as he struck again for the Blues in Saturday's 2-1 win over Liverpool at Anfield.

Last week, Del Bosque said he had left Costa out of the squad for Spain's forthcoming internationals for fitness reasons.

Spain take on Belarus in a Euro 2016 qualifier on Nov. 15 and face world champions Germany in a friendly in Vigo the following Tuesday.

Brazil-born Costa played in their most recent qualifiers -- against Slovakia and Luxembourg -- contrary to the wishes of his club manager Jose Mourinho, missing four club games on his return to London.

Del Bosque told a news conference last week he had been informed that the 26-year-old was not 100 percent fit and therefore did not call him up.

He said: "It has nothing to do with whether he later plays for his club. He always wants to come with us, but we have spoken and this is the best for his health."

And after seeing Costa's performance at Anfield -- where he hit the winner for the Premier League leaders -- AS reported him as saying: "He looked very good, played almost the whole match and he was fine.

"It is true that the injuries to the pelvis are very difficult. All of us who have had them know that healing is a process and we have opted, whether right or wrong, that he not does join us this time.

"There is nothing to it [Costa's absence]. I am sure some over the past few days have seen it as a sign of weakness on our part, but it isn't. We are football people, and are perfectly aware of Diego's situation.

"The other day, I said he would play against Liverpool, and that is what happened. But to have him play two more matches would have been counterproductive to his health, so we opted not to recall him."

News of Costa's omission from the latest Spain squad came after Del Bosque had stressed that he would be "stubborn" over calling the striker up for international duty, even as Mourinho continued to blame Spain for his injury problems.

The Spain coach said he welcomed the opportunity to have a look at other players, adding: "We have been constantly doing this [updating the squad] since we took over seven years ago . We are always subbing in where obligatory and necessary."
