Real Sociedad shock Atletico Madrid, Athletic Bilbao pick up point at Valencia

Imanol Agirretxe headed a late winner as managerless Real Sociedad claimed a shock 2-1 victory over 10-man Atletico Madrid in a hot-tempered match which saw 10 yellow cards issued at Anoeta.

Mario Mandzukic handed the visitors the lead early on but Carlos Vela equalised within five minutes to make things level at the break, while Guilherme Siqueira was sent off early in the second half before Agirretxe netted the winner after 82 minutes.

The three points see Sociedad, who have been strongly linked with David Moyes for their vacant head coach position, move out of the bottom three and into 15th, while the reigning champions remain fourth -- level on points but with a better goal difference than Sevilla.

Real Madrid still head the standings, with Atletico now four points adrift of their city rivals.

Valencia surrendered their 100 percent record at Mestalla and slipped to third in the Primera Division table after being held to a 0-0 draw by Athletic Bilbao.

Nuno Espirito Santo's men were starved of goalscoring chances by Ernesto Valverde's organised side and are now three points behind leaders Real Madrid and a point from Barcelona.

Valencia had scored three times in each of their five matches at Mestalla but were pegged back by a determined and energetic Athletic side, who came into the game on the back of two consecutive league wins but hurting from their untimely exit from the Champions League in midweek.

Victor Casadesus' second-half equaliser allowed struggling Levante to deny Sevilla all three points in a bruising 1-1 draw at the Sanchez Pizjuan.

Vitolo's header gave the hosts the lead after half an hour but Levante never let their heads drop and got a deserved equaliser in the 80th minute through Casadesus, although Sevilla passed up a litany of late chances to grab a winner. The game saw almost 15 minutes in total added on to allow injured players to be treated.

Unai Emery's side have dropped five points in the two games since they went joint top of the Primera Division table and are now four points off leaders Real Madrid, while Levante remain in the relegation zone despite picking up a fourth point in two matches.

Diego Colotto scored a stoppage-time equaliser to salvage a 1-1 draw for Espanyol at home to Villarreal.

The Yellow Submarine had looked set to put successive defeats to Sevilla, Valencia and FC Zurich behind them with a three-point haul at the Power8 Stadium thanks to Mario Gaspar's first-half goal.

However, with the match having already entered additional time at the end of the game, Espanyol stunned their visitors by drawing level through Colotto's close-range finish.

The draw is not what either side would have been hoping for coming into the match, with Espanyol now having gone four games without a win while Villarreal would have been desperate for a victory after their recent poor run.
