Europa League: Tottenham see off Asteras, St Etienne deny Inter Milan

Tottenham continued their march towards the Europa League knock-out stages with victory in Greece, yet their shocking second-half display against Asteras Tripolis will be of major concern to Mauricio Pochettino.

Andros Townsend's first-half penalty and a Harry Kane header minutes later proved the difference at the Theodoros Kolokotronis Stadium as Spurs secured back-to-back Group C wins.

Demba Ba's second-half double kept Besiktas on track as they completed a double over Partizan Belgrade, 2-0.

The former Chelsea striker converted a 55th-minute penalty and then added a second goal seven minutes later to secure three more Group C points to go with those they collected in Serbia last month following a 4-0 victory, Partizan's heaviest ever home defeat in Europe.

However, the visitors very nearly snatched a point at the end when, after Sasa Markovic had reduced the deficit with a 78th-minute strike from distance -- his side's first goal in the group -- substitute Danko Lazovic crashed a shot against the bar deep into injury time.

It was nowhere near as straightforward as it should have been, though, with Asteras deserving much more than Jeronimo Barrales' late consolation goal and a 2-1 home defeat.

Everton took a major step towards the knockout stages as goals from Leon Osman, Phil Jagielka and Steven Naismith saw them claim a comfortable 3-0 victory over Lille at Goodison Park.

The Toffees took a deserved lead in the 27th minute when Osman -- on the same day it was announced he had agreed a one-year extension to his contract -- rifled past Vincent Enyeama. Jagielka's header then doubled the advantage three minutes before the interval, before Naismith struck home in the 61st minute.

Substitutes Aaron Hunt and Nicklas Bendtner scored two apiece to inspire Wolfsburg to a 5-1 victory over opponents FC Krasnodar.

The Bundesliga side were locked at 0-0 with their Russian opponents at half-time, but Hunt made the difference as he netted twice within 12 minutes of his arrival. Wanderson gave the away side a glimmer of hope after 72 minutes but Joshua Guilavogui restored the two-goal cushion and Bendtner snatched a late brace to make it 5-1.

Manuel Pasqual spared Fiorentina from an embarrassing home defeat to PAOK Salonika by firing home the free-kick that sent the Italians into the knockout stages.

Mario Gomez, making his long-awaited comeback from injury, fluffed countless chances to score and when the Italians ran out of puff, PAOK hit them on the counter to notch through Maarten Martens. There was, however, enough time remaining for Pasqual to make it 1-1 and, with PAOK still six points behind them in third and unable to catch up, Fiorentina are guaranteed a place in the last 32.

St Etienne denied Inter Milan the chance to secure their progression to the knockout stages by holding the Serie A club to a 1-1 draw at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard.

Victory in France would have seen Inter book a top-half finish in Group F and they were put on the right track when Dodo notched before half-time. But the Nerazzurri failed to respond to Moustapha Bayal Sall's equaliser and can still be caught by third-placed St Etienne over the course of the next two rounds.

Jonathan de Guzman scored a hat-trick as Napoli moved into the top half of Group I with a comfortable 3-0 home victory over Young Boys.

The Netherlands international notched a sensational first goal from wide on the left wing to give the Italians the advantage heading into half-time and he doubled up shortly after the hour mark. The team from Bern offered little in the way of resistance and a lack of concentration allowed De Guzman to claim the match-ball after scoring an easy third goal in the last 10 minutes.

David Lafata continued his hot streak with a brace as Sparta Prague went top with victory over Slovan Bratislava.

Sparta ran out 4-0 winners at Stadion Letna, one better than sides' previous meeting, with Lafata scoring his fourth and fifth of the competition. The 33-year-old opened and closed the scoring, with Ladislav Krejci and Costa Nhamoinesu also on the scoresheet.

Borussia Monchengladbach went top of Group A as goals from Raffael and Patrick Hermann sealed victory over Apollon Limassol.

The German side remain unbeaten after four games, with two wins and two draws following this 2-0 success at Tsirion Stadium. The impressive Thorgan Hazard set up Raffael's opener in the 56th minute before substitute Hermann settled it in the dying seconds.

FC Zurich edged a breathless 10-minute goal-rush to upset Villarreal 3-2 at the Stadion Letzigrund. Zurich came into the match bottom of Group A and winless in their first three attempts, while their Spanish visitors were looking to all-but assure their progress to the next stage.

But the Swiss side avenged a 4-1 defeat in the reverse fixture, getting the odd goal in five scored between the 20th and 30th minute of the match. Yassine Chikhaoui claimed the winner for Zurich, who had twice levelled within moments of conceding in a scarcely believable passage of play.

A piece of Brazilian magic denied Celtic early qualification for the group stages as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Astra Giurgiu in a fog-bound stadium in Romania in Group D.

Celtic were heading for the last 32 following Stefan Johansen's brilliant strike 32 minutes into a game that looked set to be postponed amid poor visibility at the Marin Anastasovici stadium. Stefan Scepovic missed a good chance to double Celtic's lead and Charlie Mulgrew saw a shot pushed on to the post two minutes before William Amorim equalised in the 79th minute.

The Brazilian curled home from a difficult position to find the brilliance that was needed to beat Craig Gordon. Leigh Griffiths had a goal disallowed in the 83rd minute, which would have sent Celtic through but they remain in a strong position, five points ahead of the Dinamo Zagreb with two games left.

Jose Antonio Reyes was on target as holders Sevilla were made to work to retain their position at the head of Group G with a 3-1 win over Standard Liege.

The Spaniards looked to be cruising when Kevin Gameiro fired them into an 18th-minute lead, but Paul-Jose M'Poku's free-kick levelled it before Reyes struck three minutes before the break. Substitute Carlos Bacca's late strike sealed a 3-1 victory.

Karim El Ahmadi and Lex Immers lifted Feyenoord from the foot of the table as they gained revenge over Rijeka.

The Dutchmen, who lost 3-1 in Croatia last month on a night when Andrej Kramaric plundered a 14-minute hat-trick, took an early grip of the game and never looked like releasing it as they eased to a 2-0 victory. El Ahmadi fired them in front with just eight minutes gone and Lex Immers' 20th-minute header gave them the comfort they needed to see out a win which left them in second place behind leaders Sevilla.

Jonathan Soriano hit a hat-trick as Salzburg roared into the knockout stage with a 5-1 demolition of Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia in the Group D clash.

The Austrians scored four times in the second half, stamping out any hope of a Dinamo comeback after the hosts had briefly made it 2-1. Soriano had the visitors in front at half-time and Kevin Kampl made it two soon after the break.

Angelo Henriquez pulled one back a minute later, only for Soriano to scored Salzburg's third four minutes after that. And the away side showed no mercy with further goals from Massimo Bruno and Soriano to run out emphatic winners.

Israel international Lior Rafaelov plundered a first-half hat-trick against FC Copenhagen as Club Brugge maintained their bid in style with a 4-0 win.

Rafaelov struck three times inside 29 first-half minutes to hand the Belgians an unassailable lead in Copenhagen as they extended their unbeaten run in Europe this season to eight games with a fourth successive win on the road, Ruud Vormer cementing victory on the hour. The 4-0 defeat was the home side's first loss at home in the group and dented their hopes of making it out of Group B.

Gideon Baah and Vallteri Moren fired HJK Helsinki to their first victory and jeopardised Torino's chances of making it through in the process.

The Finnish club frustrated their enthusiastic opponents from Serie A in the first half and twice broke their defence after the break, with Baah and Moren both beating Daniele Padelli. Fabio Quagliarella halved the deficit in the dying moments but Helsinki had done enough to secure all three points from a 2-1 win.

Nikola Kalinic scored twice as Dnipro claimed their first win of the campaign away at FK Qarabag. The striker had the visitors ahead but Leroy George grabbed an equaliser before Kalinic netted his second to hand his side a 2-1 win and reignite their Group F hopes. Dnipro, who lost at home to the same opposition last time out in this competition, are now level on four points with their Azeri rivals.

Kevin Kuranyi fired Dinamo Moscow into the next round as victory at home to Estoril maintained their 100 percent record in Group E. The hosts finally made the breakthrough to settle an attritional game in the 78th minute when their German striker scored from close range. The win made it four out of four for the Russians in a pool they have dominated.

PSV Eindhoven put themselves in a good position to qualify with a battling 3-2 win away at Panathinaikos.

Phillip Cocu's men trailed twice in Greece thanks to goals from Abdul Ajagun and Mladen Petric but each time the visitors came back with Memphis Depay, Luuk de Jong and Georginio Wijnaldum securing victory. The result leaves PSV second in the pool behind already-qualified Dinamo and three points clear of Estoril with Panathinaikos bottom with just a single point.

Dynamo Kiev claimed top spot in Group J, beating AaB 2-0 with both goals coming after the hosts had been reduced to 10 men.

In a match short on chances for both sides, Domagoj Vida's opening goal came moments after Aleksander Dragovic had seen red in the 68th minute. And although the game was not completely safe until Oleg Gusev scored a second two minutes into time added on, AaB had done little to worry them in the meantime.

Lucian Filip scored in the fifth minute of stoppage time as Steaua Bucharest salvaged a 2-2 draw from their trip to Rio Ave.

Diego Lopes' first-half strike was cancelled out by Cristian Keseru on the hour, but after Lopes put the hosts back in front from the penalty spot with 13 minutes left, it seemed Rio Ave were destined for their first win of the group stages. However, Filip had other ideas and fired in from close range to deny the Portuguese, moments after Rio Ave had Prince-Desir Gouano sent off for a second bookable offence.

Guingamp boosted their qualification hopes in Group K with a 2-0 win over Dinamo Minsk.

Claudio Beauvue gave the French side the lead just before half-time and Jonas Lossl saved Igor Stasevich's penalty to preserve a third straight European clean sheet. Christophe Mandanne then scored a late clincher to take his side three points clear of PAOK Salonika in second place behind Fiorentina, after those two teams drew 1-1 in Florence.

The status quo remains at the top and bottom of Group L after Legia Warsaw beat Metalist Kharkiv 2-1 to qualify for the knockout stages, but the unbeaten home side were pushed all the way by their visitors.

Victory means the home side are on 12 points with four wins from four, with third-placed Lokeren on four after drawing with Trabzonspor. The result in Belgium also means Metalist cannot go through.

Trabzonspor held Lokeren to a 1-1 draw in Belgium to improve their chances of making it through.

With Legia through and Metalist without a point from four games, the battle for the other qualification spot will come down to these two. And the Turkish side are three points clear of their rivals from East Flanders after Abdul Majeed Waris cancelled out Ayanda Patosi's early goal.
